How to Apply for a Student Visa

Secure Admission
Obtain admission to a SEVP-approved institution in the US.
Pay the SEVIS Fee
After receiving Form I-20 or DS-2019 from the institution, pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee.
Complete Visa Application
Fill out the online Nonimmigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160) and print the confirmation page.
Schedule Interview
Schedule an interview appointment at the nearest US embassy or consulate.
Attend Interview
Bring all required documents, including the confirmation page, visa application fee receipt, passport, Form I-20 or DS-2019, SEVIS fee receipt, and any additional requested documents.
Biometrics & Decision
Attend a biometrics appointment if required and await a decision on your visa application. Apply well in advance of your intended travel date for timely processing.
Academic Requirements
Students from non-English speaking countries may need to demonstrate English proficiency through tests like TOEFL or IELTS. Requirements vary by institution and program.
- TOEFL (iBT) scores between 60.0 and 100.0 overall, or
- IELTS scores between 6.0 and 7.5 with no band less than 6.0.
- SAT or ACT scores may also be required by some institutions for undergraduate admissions.
