Pre-Removal Risk Assessments
Pre-Removal Risk Assessments (PRRAs) offer individuals facing deportation from Canada a crucial opportunity to seek protection if they would encounter risks upon return to their home country. This process serves as an additional avenue for safeguarding individuals who may not qualify for refugee status but still face significant threats if removed from Canada.
How To Apply
- Submit a written PRRA application to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) within the specified timeframe after receiving the removal order.
- Include comprehensive information and evidence supporting the claim of potential risks upon return to the home country.
Risk Assessment
- IRCC evaluates the risks the individual would face if returned to their home country, considering personal circumstances and country conditions.
- Assessment factors include human rights violations, prevailing conditions in the home country, and individual-specific situations.
Decision and Outcome
- If substantial grounds exist to believe that the individual would face persecution, torture, risk to life, or cruel and unusual treatment in their home country, they may be granted protection in Canada.
- Unsuccessful PRRA applications may result in enforcement of the removal order, requiring the individual to leave Canada.
Eligibility
- Individuals subject to deportation or removal orders from Canada are generally eligible to apply for a PRRA.
- The PRRA is open to individuals from any country, including those whose refugee claims have been rejected.
